United States Presidents from James K. Polk to James A. Garfield

 

"No president who performs his duties faithfully and conscientiously can have any leisure." ~ James K. Polk

He was a Democrat who served for only one term. He passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. During his presidency, the Transcontinential Railroad was built, Bleeding Kansas occured, and the Gadsen purchase happened. 

He was a Whig who served for only one term. He made the Compromise of 1850, and passed the Fugitive-Slave Law of 1850. The 2nd Era of Good Feelings started during his term. He was the president who made Commore Perry open trade with Japan. He also lept Hawaii from European posetion during the Colonization of the Pacific Islands. 

He was a Whig who nearly served for one term. He died of food poisoning in office. He pushed for the Compromise of 1850, and the Gold Rush happened during his presidency. He also supported the building of the underground railroad.

A Democrat who served for one term. He was the president during the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Grenada, the California Gold Rush, and the Oregon Country gained from Britain. He made an Independent Treasury in 1846.

He was a Republican who served for two term. He used to be a soldier and general of the Confederate states before becoming a president. During his presidency, there were the Whiskey Ring, the Crime of 1873, the Panic of 1873, the failled annexation of Santo Domingo, the Cuban Insurrection, and Political Corruption (Credit Mobiler Scandal).

He was a Democrat who served for one term. He was the president during Reconstruction, and the first president to be Impeached. He was, though, one vote short to be removed from office. He imposed the 14th Amendment and the Tenure of Office Act. He is a supporter of Black Suffrage.

He was a Republican who served for nearly two terms. He was the president who led the Civil War for the Union side and finally abolished slavery. He was assassinated in a theatre in 1865, just after the end of the Civil War. He prevented the foreign recognition of the Confederecy, and blocked all their ports to prevent imports and exports going to the Confederate States. 

He was a Democrat who served for one term. He held the Dred Scott Case, and was president during John Brown's invasion of Harper's Ferry. He asserted authority in Central America, and continued to try and annex Cuba.

He was a Republican who nearly served for one term. He was assassinated during his presidency. During his presidency, he had to appease to both the Stalwarts and the Half-breeds, due to the split of the Republican party. If he had lived a little longer, he would have made civil service reforms and other initiatives. 

A Republican who served for one term. He made the Compromise of 1877, increased the power of the executives, passed the Electoral Count Act, and also passed the Civil Rights Act of 1875. The Jim Crow Laws were there during his presidency.
