The American Revolution
The Revolution that gave independence to the United States of America from the British Empire.
Cause: The taxing of American goods, America had to ship goods to only England, and no voice in Parliament (for the Seven Years' War). The Enlightenment ideas from Europe also was one of the causes for the revolution.
Effect: America gains independence, the Mississippi River is the western boundary for the USA, and the making of the Articles of Confederation.
The Mexican-American War
A war between neighboring countries; USA and Mexico
Cause: There was a dispute regarding the Mexican-American border in the southern territory, and when Polk tried to negotiate, it failed.
Effect: Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo ended the war, America gains territory from California to Utah, and pays Mexico $15 Million to show that US didn't annex the territories.
The French and Indian War (The Seven Years' War)
This was also known by most historians as 'Wolrd War 0". The French and Indian War was fought by France and Native Americans vs. British Empire.
Cause: Tensions between England and France for the colonization of the lands in Ohio River Valley.
Effect: England gains French Canada and Spanish Florida, and the Biritsh Navy dominates North America.

The Civil War
A war between the Union States and the Confederate states, mainly regarding slavery.
Cause: There were many causes, such as the Kansas Nebraska Act, Uncle Tom's Cabin, political parties, Bleeding Kansas, Dred Scott decision, John Brown, and Lincoln's victory in the 1860 elections.
Effect: Emacipation Proclamation, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment, Draft Riots, war expense, Reconstruction, and the rise of Western Expansion




War of 1812
A war between France and America vs. England due to trade tensions between France and England.
Cause: President Madison states that he would trade with both France and England, unless they interfere with either trade. France agreed with this, but England kept harassing the US merchant ships. Also, America wanted to rid British in the west
Effect: America lost the war because it was unprepared, the capital was burned down (by Canada), and most battles reached a stalemate. One US battle won by America was AFTER the Treaty of Ghent (ended the war) was signed.

The Indian Wars
This war was during the Civil War, but it was a war on the Western territories against the Native Americans.
Cause: The Natives were living in the Western territories due to the Trail of Tears, but the Americans wanted to expand to the west for more land.
Effect: Americanization, Indian Reservations, Indian Removal Act, Dawes Act, and Cheif Joseph's speech.

The Spanish-American War
A war between America and Spain in Cuba and in Philliphines.
Cause: The Cuban Revolt, Yellow Journalism (USS Maine), and the DeLome Letter.
Effect: The Treaty of Paris ended the war (US gains Philliphines, Guam, and Puerto Rico), Cuba becomes independent, Phillippine Inssurection, and the Platt Amendment.

President during the Spanish American War.

The Maine is best known for her catastrophic loss in Havana Harbor on the evening of 15 February 1898. Sent to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain, she exploded from a mine and sank with 260 crew men. The man who wrote this article, William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, blamed Spain for the cause, even though no one knew who did it.

The Phillippine-American War
A Filipino revolt against the US, after the US aided the Phillippines to gain independence against the Spanish Empire.
Cause: Phillipines did not want US military to stick long and did not want limited freedom and government.
Effect: The Phillippine Independence Act and the Treaty of Manila.
